Alternative Health and You
Alternative Health is gaining in popularity among people of all ages. Many find that Alternative Health can form a successful strategy to maintaining health. Others find that long-standing health problems can be resolved with naturopathic medicine.
Alternative Health has been practiced for thousands of years in many cultures around the world. It is only rencently that the term "alternative" has been applied to what once was the considered the main-line way to treat diseases. Traditional Chinese Medicine is a classic example. Others include Ayurveda, Native American Shamanism and the Eclectic American physicians of the 1800s. The term "naturopathic medicine" grew out of the Eclectic movement which resulted in the foundation of many accredited schools of alternative medicine. The alternative physicians of today are trained and skilled in their field. They typically have three to four years of postgraduate medical instruction.
The alternative specialist approaches diagnosis and treatment of illnesses in a different way than standard, traditional doctors. The alternative uses a whole-body strategy to strengthen and tone all the systems of the body. Each patient's treatment is individualized. The Naturopath's treatment takes into account a person's physical conditions, genetics, and emotional and lifestyle factors.
Take, for example, how alternative health might treat an ongoing skin condition, like eczema. The Naturopath would treat the condition as being a symptom of an underlying cause. He or she might use a blood cleansing herb like Burdock root or an immune system boosting herb, such as Echinacea, to address what caused the eczema in the first place.

Traditional medicine might treat the eczema, the condition, as the cause. A doctor would likely prescribe ointments or medications to alleviate the symptoms. The symptoms may disappear temporarily, but return later. The Naturopath addresses the underlying cause of a problem and over time eliminates the cause and the condition.
Alternative health approches uses diet and nutrition as a means of healing. Alternative physicians are trained in nutrition and diet so they know when a vitamin or mineral deficiency contributes to a condition of illness or poor health. A Naturopath can help you incorporate diet into good, healthy living.
The alternative physician also specializes in other areas, like physical therapy, fasting, acupuncture, aromatherapy and other natural and non-invasive therapies. While naturopathic medicine focuses on natural and non-invasive therapies, the naturopathic physician is trained in modern medical diagnostic testing and, if you need surgery, can refer you to a surgeon. In some circumstances, a Naturopath might even prescribe conventional antibiotics.
Check your phone book to find a naturopathic physician near you or consult the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.
Alternative health is popular for one simple reason: it works! Difficult and persistent conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and menopause can be greatly improved or even eliminated by naturopathic medicine and methodologies. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.

Not too long ago, ovarian cancer was a killer offering little hope to its sufferers. Over the past couple of decades, though, improvements have been made in treating ovarian cancer and the survival rate has been steadily improving. According to the Cancer Group Institute (www.cancergroup.com), ovarian cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer in women, and contributes to 24,500 new cases every year - 14,200 of these women die. Ovarian cancer is very insidious and will display few symptoms, if any at all, until the tumor has progressed to a lethal level. The cause of ovarian cancer is not completely understood, but is thought to be related to a number of contributing factors, including heredity. Ovarian cancer treatments are more successful today than in years past, largely due to more research and new treatment therapies. At one time, women who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer were beyond the point where they would benefit from treatment. Their only choice was to go through invasive and potentially dangerous surgery to remove the cancerous ovaries. Most of the time, though, it was too late and the ovarian cancer had already spread to other parts of the body. - Sun Screens
Too much sun can be extremely harmful to your skin. If you are going to be outside for any length of time in the hot sun, you must use sunscreen. Ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays are invisible, but can be very damaging to the skin if it is not protected. These damaging rays can cause skin cancer, altered pigmentation, dilated blood vessels and change the texture of your skin. Each of those factors can accelerate the aging of your skin. When you have a sunburn, you damage the skin. Repeated sunburns mean a higher risk of developing skin cancer later in life. Don't think that tanning is safe either. Tanning is simply a light burn. There is no safe tan. - Sunburn
Have you ever had one of those really bad sunburns? You know the type. You've spent the whole day on the beach, maybe you applied a quick layer of sunscreen in the morning. By the end of the day your back starts to feel kind of warm. When bedtime comes around you can't stand to lie on your back. You wake up the next morning and you are really hurting. All you can think about is the intense, burning pain lighting up your back. The back that was pink the night before is now almost purple. - Types Of Cancer
Today, there are many diseases and afflictions we need to be concerned with. Some diseases and conditions are especially scary because we know there's nothing we can do to prevent them. Cancer is a perfect example. While we may not want to think about it, cancer is a reality that we must consider. There are cures and treatments for many kinds of cancers, but for quite a few there is nothing yet. Pancreatic cancer and lung cancer, for instance, are almost always fatal. We must support continued research and development for cancer. - Why You Can't "Spot Reduce"
When it comes to cellulite and flab, almost all of us have some problem areas. Even people who have achieved their ideal body weight can have a spot here or there that they just aren't happy with. Maybe you have love handles, flabby arms or sagging skin on the hips. You can find products from creams and other applications, to pills, to gadgets and machines that claim to help you lose the fat on these areas. The truth is, though, that none of these products are going to work. You really can't "spot reduce" specific areas of the body. - Why You Can't "Spot Reduce"
